In terms of media attention, E3 is one of the most popular association-run events in the country, being the place where many new video games make their debut. ESA is only the latest in a growing list of associations that have canceled or postponed upcoming events because of the virus, but the group's decision stands out in that most canceled events so far were to be held in March. E3 was scheduled for June 9-11 in Los Angeles.
"Following increased and overwhelming concerns about the COVID-19 virus, we felt this was the best way to proceed during such an unprecedented global situation," ESA said in a statement. "We are very disappointed that we are unable to hold this event for our fans and supporters. But we know it's the right decision based on the information we have today."
The association said it would reach out to exhibitors and attendees about refunds. In the meantime, the group will explore options with members to showcase video game announcements online.
Questions were raised about E3's future even before COVID-19 hit. The show has seen several major video game companies pull out in recent years to host their own events, including Sony, maker of the popular PlayStation video game console. Video game companies also have increasing turned to online video streaming platforms and consumer-focused events to generate buzz for their projects.
ESA opened the formerly industry-only show to the public for the first time in 2017 in hopes of revitalizing interest in the event. More than 66,000 people attended E3 in 2019, the group said.
